William Sylvester Dowdy Jr. was born on March 5, 1945, to the union of Sylvester Dowdy Sr. and Pauline Dowdy.
William attended G.W. Carver high school and graduated in 1963 where he was voted Most Versatile among his peers. Known locally and throughout surrounding areas for his athletic prowess, William earned the nickname “Jump Dowdy” as he excelled and lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track. He played an integral part in the 1960-1961 District 3AAA track meettournament alongside fellow teammateswinning top medals for Carver. Fans and sport enthusiasts alike would drive from neighboring towns to watch him perform effortlessly on the court and field. After graduation, William served his country in the Army where he was discharged honorably due to unforeseen medical conditions.
Remembered for his kind heart, generosity to others and words of wisdom, William departed this life peacefully on October 25, 2024 at the age of 79.
He is preceded in death by his parents Sylvester and Pauline Dowdy, stepmother Willa E. Dowdy, twin sisters Brenda Daniel and Betty Brown and Dorothy Crockett, beloved aunt Lucille Murray, son Derek Mitchell, grandsons Antoine King, Austin Phenix, Montrell Phenix and granddaughter Precious Phenix.
William leaves to cherish his memories: sons Bernard, Byron, Jeffrey(Nikki), , Reginald(Rachel), Shawn Paul,Thaddeaus(Niya) and William Michael -daughters Bridgette (Tony), Renata, Roshonda, and Yolanda(Michael), brother Thomas Mulinax and sister Deborah Dowdy Lofton, , longtime friend Charles Burns,33 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 2 great greatgrandchildren alongside a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
